Australian Open: Down-Underdogs

Date January 26, 2008

Jo-Wilfried TsongaIf you follow tennis you might have been surprised at the recent defeat of Rafael Nadal by an unseeded Frenchman named Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Surprising as it was that the number two seed was defeated, I was even more surprised that the world’s best and highest ranked tennis player (since Pete Sampras) Roger Federer, was defeated today by Novak Djokovic.

This makes for a pair of interesting finals. In the men’s final I’ll be interested to see how well Tsonga can hold up to Djokovic. I suspect that it won’t be the most intense Grand Slam final of recent years, but based on this past week’s events, I could be wrong. Perhaps this is the year of the down-underdogs.

There is also quite a bit of buzz surrounding the women’s final. The number four seed Ana Ivanovic takes on number 5 seed Maria Sharapova in what some are calling The Hottie Bowl. Personally, I think the women’s match will exhibit some better tennis as these two players are more closely matched. I won’t even bother making a prediction on the winner for this one, it can go either way.

The women’s final is tonight live at 9:30EST, and the men’s final is live on Sunday morning at 3:30 EST or 4:00pm EST.
