The Best Cupcakes in Toronto

Date March 22, 2008

Bread & Roses CupcakesI know it’s a relatively trivial thing to be talking about cupcakes, but these little pieces of heaven from Bread & Roses Bakery Cafe truly deserve a mention, even if it’s only on my blog.

Typically when one thinks of cupcakes they think of dry store-bought ones that have the same overly sweet grocery store icing on them as their big brothers, the regular birthday cakes.

These ones are different though. First off, the cake is a delicious chocolate that is perfectly moist and fluffy, yet sufficiently dense to satisfy you.  Second, the icing is not your typical store-bought stuff.  It’s thick, creamy and has just the right amount of sweetness.

But these cupcakes are more than just the sum of their parts (i.e. cake and icing).  It’s the way these are made that makes them the best, in my opinion.  Picture cupcakes your mom used to make.  These are piled high with icing, and topped with candy sprinkles.  They literally cram as much icing on the cake tops as humanly possible.  Now that’s how you make a cupcake!

You can tell from the weight of these things that you’re in for a treat.  I made the mistake of having a whole one to myself once, but that was just silly.  These things are perfect for sharing, even if they are a bit messy to handle.

So next time you’re in the Bloor West Village, stop by Bread & Roses and try their chocolate cupcakes.  You won’t be disappointed!
